CDL roadmap

From ELDT completion to your CDL

Use this sequence as a general guide. Always confirm the exact licensing steps with your state.

  1. 01

    Confirm your ELDT record

Make sure your theory completion was reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry using the same legal information shown on your license or permit.

  2. 02

    Earn or confirm your CLP

Follow your state’s requirements for the Commercial Learner’s Permit, knowledge tests, DOT medical certification, and any required waiting period.

  3. 03

    Begin behind-the-wheel training

Class A and Class B applicants need hands-on range and public-road instruction from an eligible provider before the CDL skills test.

  4. 04

    Master the tested skills

Practice pre-trip inspection, straight-line and offset backing, alley dock, parking, coupling, vehicle control, and safe road driving.

  5. 05

    Take the CDL skills test

Your test normally includes vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and an on-road evaluation. Requirements and scheduling vary by state.
