HazMat Endorsement: An ELDT Guide for CDL Drivers

A Hazardous Materials endorsement can expand the freight a commercial driver is qualified to transport. Because hazardous materials require careful handling and strict compliance, first-time H endorsement applicants must complete applicable ELDT theory training before taking the state knowledge test.
What HazMat theory covers
Training focuses on recognizing hazardous materials, shipping papers, marking and placarding, loading and unloading, route planning, emergency response, security awareness, and safe vehicle operation. The goal is to help drivers understand both routine responsibilities and high-consequence situations.
What happens after the course
After successfully completing training, the provider reports the result to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. The driver can then continue with the remaining federal and state requirements, which may include a knowledge test and Transportation Security Administration background check.
Prepare your information carefully
Use the same legal name, date of birth, license number, and issuing state shown on your CDL or permit when enrolling. Even a small mismatch can interfere with the reporting and verification process.
